Save Enobong’s Abducted Children

On the 19th of November, 2017, Enobong Effiong Joseph and her four children were abducted from Calabar at about 7am on their way to church and taken to Aba in Abia State. The woman who was separated from her children (at Aba), was taken to be killed in Always Ibom but she was lucky to escaped from her abductors. Strangers who heard her pathetic story gave her a secured place to pass the night and a day after, she returned to Calabar. Immediately she arrived Calabar, she reported the case to the Police, the prime suspect was arrested and currently in detention at the Cross River State CID.

The children, all boys are 4, 3, 2 years while the youngest is 8 months old. The case was referred to Basic Rights Counsel Initiative (BRCI) from Girl’s Power Initiative. #BRCI has been working with the police to rescue the children.

The investigation process in this case is very slow, slower than what one will expect from the police in an abduction case. While the Police is willing to see to the end of the matter, they are constrained by lack of resources. The investigative process involves traveling to Aba were the mother and her children where separated, visiting the village where she was taken to be killed, running a comprehensive check on the mobile phone of the prime suspect with the different telecommunication networks and the people she has had contact with. Indeed, it is a grueling process. The Police has expressed their inability to muster resources to successfully carry out all that is required for the children to be recovered and for the suspect to be charged to court. They have drawn a budget of Five Hundred Thousand Naira (500,000) only.

The survivor is a widow who sells water leave to make a living. She currently cannot afford the cost of the investigation cum rescue of her children. The woman, whose eight months old sucking baby was whisked away by criminals who do not have regard for human life is currently helpless. She is right now the victim of a system that has failed to support the very people in whose interest it was put in place. The pain of losing four children is unimaginable. The hope of ever seeing her children again is dwindling because time is quietly passing by with the police not being able to match the passing time with required action that could lead to the rescue of the children before it’s too late.

BRCI is compelled to raise a public cry for help on behalf of this woman and her children, who could become the solution to global problems if they can be rescued alive. We are appealing to you to donate in support of this widow’s case. The lives of her four innocent children are on the line if we don’t act fast.
